Week 15 - Canned Heat and Stove, Purchase Canned Soup

Week 15 – March 10

Make canned heat.  Cut corrugated cardboard slightly shorter than the inside depth of a tuna can.  Cut so you can see the inside webbing along the top and bottom edge.  Roll the cardboard and place it in the can.  Add a piece of cardboard at the edge that is about 1/2 inch wide and 2 1/2 inches tall to place at the outer edge for a wick.  Melt wax in a double boiler and pour the hot wax over the cardboard until the can is filled.
Make a foil damper.  Cut a  piece of aluminum foil 4 times the width of the can.  Fold the foil so it is the width of the can and  4 layers thick.  Fold one ed down about 1/3.  Place a curve in the foil so that the unfolded end touches the ground and the folded end lays on the can.  This can now be used to cover any amount of the can as needed to adjust the heat.
Make a stove.  From a #10 can cut 2 slits from the top of the can down that are 3 inches long and 4 inches apart.  This will be the door.  On the back side of the can next to the bottom edge punch 4 holes with a can punch.  Pull the door outward,  Turn the can upside down, insert the canned heat, light it, and coon on the new can top or put a can on it and cook in that.  Smoke will exit through the holes punched in the back side.  The heat will last about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Home food storage: Purchase canned soup.

  Canned Heat Directions

My cardboard was narrower than normal.  I cut mine 44" long.  The wick is 1/2 inch wide and 2 1/2 inches long.

I bent a #10 can to form a spout and put it in a pan of water to made a double boiler.  It took about 4 times the amount of wax you see in the can.

Pour hot wax over cardboard until cans are full.

Take a piece of aluminum foil 4 times the width of the can and fold it in half twice, so that it becomes the width of the can and is now 4 layers thick.  Fold the narrow end under about 1/3 to 1/2 of the length.  Curve the foil so that the end that is 8 layers thick lays on the can and the end that is 4 layers thick lays on the ground.  This is now the damper to adjust the heat.  Slide the damper to cover and uncover the canned heat as needed.

Stove Directions

Punch 4 holes in the bottom back side of a #10 can

Make two slits 3" long and 4" apart at the top of the can.  Pull Flap out.  This is difficult to pull, because of the can curve.  BE CAREFUL OF THE SHARP EDGES.

Light canned heat.  Turn stove over and place on top of the canned heat.

Place the damper over the canned heat if needed and you are now ready to cook on the stove.  You can cook directly on the stove or place a container on the stove and cook in it.  Cook in small containers such as tuna cans, soup cans, and small pans.
